Recap: 2015 ECAC Division III Indoor Championships

Women’s Recap

New York, March 7, 2015 - Jess Huber of Plattsburgh recorded one the fastest DIII times of the season to win the 200m in 24.74.

Buffalo State’s Jazlyn Porter won the 400m in 56.49 just ahead of Union College’s Noemie Bechu, who finished in 56.89.

The 500m was taken by Sasa Vann of Buffalo State, who was chased closely by Katelyn Ary of TCNJ. The two rounded the race’s final turn together and pressed hard to finish in 1:14.57 and 1:14.68. Ary went on to help her distance medley relay team finish first in 11:59.29.

Amy Viti of Misericordia took the win the 800m in 2:12.26 and Kristine Reed of RIT won the 1,000m in 3:01.94.

Amy Regan of Stevens Institute led throughout the entire women’s mile race and pulled away from the field during the final lap to win in 5:00.68. New England’s Abby Shafer was second in 5:01.00.

“I was just looking to come out and put together a fast mile,” said Regan. “I’m pretty happy with the way it played out.”

Taylor Bickford of Wellesley College and Mary Baughman of Alfred University were neck-and-neck during the final lap of the 5,000m, but it was Taylor who was able to stop the clock first in 17:40.57. Baughman was second in 17:40.88.

Jazmin Dunham recorded an 8.81 victory in the 60m hurdles before helping Buffalo State win the 4x200m relay in 1:41.59.

Ashley Curran of Connecticut College pulled away from the 3,000m field during the race’s final lap to finish in 10:05.09.

“I got a little tired toward the end, but I was able to push through,” said Curran. “It feels really good to get a win for my team.”

Rowan took and the held the lead after the second baton exchange of the 4x400m relay to finish in 3:54.38. 

“It’s great to run with my teammates,” said Melirah Searcy, who anchored for Rowan. “We give everything we can when we’re competing because we’re competing for each other.”

Erin Silva of Bowdoin cleared 3.91m (12’ 10”) to win the pole vault. Chelsea Vaughan of Stockton took second with a mark of 3.81m (12’ 6”).

Sarah Wiatr of Utica was furthest in the triple jump with a mark of 11.68m (38’ 4”). Ithaca’s Emilia Scheemaker was a close second with 11.64m (38’ 2.25”).

Lebanon Valley’s Mariah Smolka’s throw of 13.71m (44’ 11.75”) in the shot put secured her a first place finish over Osazenoriuwa Ebose of Swarthmore, who was second with 13.25m (43’ 5.75”). 

Brandy Smith of Ithaca won the weight throw with a toss of 16.89m (55’ 5”).

Alyssa Jasper of Worcester State scored 3391 points to win the pentathlon.

Buffalo State won the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships with 61 points, Ithaca was second with 38 points and Rochester third with 32 points.

 

Men’s Recap

Winston Lee of Cobleskill broke the Armory DIII record with his 6.76 finish in the 60m dash.

Joseph Jensen of Hamilton College won the 200m in 21.84 as well as the 400m in a DIII Armory record-breaking time of 48.36.

Kevin Desmond of Southern Maine led the 800m from the start to win in 1:52.72.

“I didn’t get the time that I wanted, but I just race to win,” said Desmond. “This may have been my last indoor 800 ever. That’s what drove me. No one wants to end on a sour note.”

Mario Mayen of St. Joseph’s College ran an impressive 1:04.48 over Nick LaBarbera of Nazareth, who ran 1:04.70, to win the 500m.

Conor Donahue of Bowdoin stole the lead from Romey Sklar of Amherst during the last 50 meters of the 1,000m. Donahue dug deep to finishing in 2:28.79 to Sklar’s 2:29.04.

Ramapo’s Peter Tuohy and Stevens Institute’s Nick Zickgraf made their move during the bell lap of the mile to finish in 4:15.06 and 4:15.11, respectively.

Wesleyan took the top two spots in the 5,000m with Evan Bieder and Taylor Titcomb finishing in 14:57.70 and 14:58.82, respectively.

Luke Campbell of Salisbury ran into the DIII top five times of the season with an 8.02 win the 60m hurdles. Conor Murtagh was close behind in 8.07.

Cortland State’s 1:28.35 finish was good enough for a 4x200m relay win over Ithaca, who finished in 1:29.49.

Moravian’s Ryan Karnopp was able to clear 4.82m (15’ 9.75”) to win the pole vault. Second was Whitman Oehler-Marx of Brockport State who jumped 4.67m (15’ 3.75”). 

Jamie Ruginski of Southern Maine reached 7.31m (23’ 11.75”) to take the long jump and Delaware Valley’s Ta’riq Thomas won the triple jump with 14.83m (48’ 8”).

Bates College’s Sean Enos has a good shot at making it to nationals after throwing 17.78m (58’ 4”) to win the shot put.

Samuel Taft of Brockport State won the heptathlon, scoring an Armory DIII record of 5057 points.

Amherst won the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships with 42 points. Brockport State and Cortland State scored  41.50 points to tie for second and Salisbury took third with 38 points.
